Our Machu Picchu category focuses on a direct and carefully organized way to visit Peru’s most iconic archaeological site by train. The available tour connects Cusco with Ollantaytambo station, continues through the scenic rail route to Aguas Calientes, and includes the bus ride up to the sanctuary for a guided exploration of the citadel. The experience is available as a 1 or 2 day itinerary, making it suitable for travelers who want an efficient full-day visit or a more relaxed option with an overnight stay in Aguas Calientes. Both versions are built around practical logistics: hotel pickup in Cusco, roundtrip train transportation, Consettur bus, Machu Picchu entrance and a professional guide.Travelers can choose between Expedition or Vistadome train options depending on the desired travel style. The 2-day version also allows more time in the area and may include the option to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain the next day, subject to the corresponding extra mountain entrance. It is a strong choice for those seeking a complete Machu Picchu visit without managing each transport segment separately.

What to bring

What Machu Picchu tours are included in this category?
This category includes a Machu Picchu tour by train with 1 or 2 day options. The route starts with hotel pickup, continues by transfer to Ollantaytambo station, train to Aguas Calientes, bus to Machu Picchu and a guided visit of the archaeological site.
What is the difference between the 1-day and 2-day Machu Picchu tour?
The 1-day tour is designed as a full-day experience with a very early pickup, train travel, guided visit, free time and return to Cusco the same day. The 2-day option includes an overnight stay in Aguas Calientes and may allow time for Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain the next day, if the extra mountain entrance is arranged.
Which train options are available for the Machu Picchu tour?
The tour can be operated with Expedition or Vistadome train options. Both connect the route to Aguas Calientes, but the specific choice depends on the option selected at booking.
What is included in the Machu Picchu tour?
The tour includes hotel pickup, roundtrip train, Consettur bus, Machu Picchu entrance and guide. These are the core logistics needed for the main visit to the citadel.
What is not included in the tour price?
Lunch and dinner on Day 1 are not included. The hotel is not included in the 1-day tour, and extra mountain entrances such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain are not included unless specifically added. Any other items not mentioned as included should be considered personal expenses.
How long is the guided tour inside Machu Picchu?
The guided visit is approximately 2.5 hours. After the guided portion, the itinerary allows some free time before continuing with the return logistics, depending on the selected schedule.
Is the Machu Picchu tour physically difficult?
The standard visit requires walking through stone paths, stairs and uneven areas inside the archaeological site, so a reasonable level of mobility is helpful. If you add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain on the 2-day option, the experience becomes more physically demanding because those are hiking extensions.
Do I need to book Machu Picchu in advance?
Advance booking is recommended because Machu Picchu entrance tickets, train services and optional mountain tickets are subject to availability. This is especially important if you want a specific train option or plan to add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.
What should I pack for a Machu Picchu tour by train?
Bring your passport or reservation ID, comfortable walking shoes, light layers, rain protection, sun protection, water, snacks and money for meals or personal expenses. If you choose the 2-day option, also pack a small overnight bag with basic toiletries and a change of clothes.

What is the best time to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?
The best time to hike the Inca Trail is during the dry season , which runs from April to October. During these months, the days are usually sunny and there is little chance of rain, making the hike easier and allowing you to enjoy spectacular views. May, June, and July are the driest months, but also the coldest. The rainy season, from November to March, has a higher probability of precipitation, and the trail is closed in February for maintenance.
What is the difficulty of the 4-day Inca Trail and what physical preparation is recommended?
The Classic 4-day Inca Trail is considered moderate to difficult . It involves hiking between 6 and 14 kilometers per day, with significant ascents and descents, and altitudes reaching up to 4,200 meters above sea level. Good physical preparation, including regular hiking and cardiovascular exercise, is recommended to fully enjoy the experience and minimize the risk of altitude sickness.
How many permits are available per day for the Inca Trail and when should I book?
Only 500 spaces are available daily for the Inca Trail , of which approximately 200 are for tourists and the rest for support staff (guides, cooks, porters). Due to this limitation, it is crucial to book your tour well in advance, ideally 6 to 7 months before your desired date, especially if you plan to travel during peak season (May to September).
Are there restrooms available along the Inca Trail?
Yes, there are basic restrooms at designated campsites along the Inca Trail. However, it is recommended that you bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Restroom facilities are limited on the trails, so hikers are encouraged to use the facilities available at the campsites and to be environmentally conscious.
Can I bring my personal luggage on the Inca Trail?
You are allowed to bring one personal daypack with your essentials (approximately 5-7 kg). Your main luggage (large backpack or suitcase) that you won't need during the trek can be safely stored at our offices in Cusco and will be returned to you upon your return. Porters will carry your camping equipment, food, and cooking utensils.
What happens if I cannot complete the Inca Trail due to health reasons or altitude?
If you experience altitude sickness or any health problem that prevents you from continuing, our guide will assist you. In most cases, the most viable option is to descend to the nearest train station (such as Wiñayhuayna) to take the train back to Cusco. The cost of this emergency transportation is not included in the tour and must be covered by the traveler. It is essential to have travel insurance that covers these types of eventualities.

The 4-Day Lares Trek focuses more on cultural immersion, visiting remote Andean communities and enjoying their hot springs, making it a more accessible route centered on local life.
What level of difficulty do these alternative hikes have?
Our alternative treks vary in difficulty. The Lares Trek is moderately difficult, with a greater focus on cultural hiking and less on extreme altitude challenges. We recommend consulting the detailed description of each trek to assess your fitness level.
What type of accommodation is offered during the hikes?
During the treks, accommodation varies. On the Salkantay Trek, you'll generally sleep in high-quality tents, providing a camping experience close to nature. On the Lares Trek, we may include overnight stays in simple local accommodations or campsites, depending on the specific itinerary and availability, always aiming for an authentic experience.
Is prior hiking experience necessary for these routes?
Prior experience isn't strictly necessary, but being in good general fitness and used to hiking will enhance your experience. For the Salkantay Trek, moderate to good fitness is recommended. For the Lares Trek, basic fitness is sufficient. We recommend preparing with hikes before your trip.
What is the best time of year to do these alternative hikes?
The best time for our alternative hikes is during the dry season in the Andes , which generally runs from April to October .
Which Cusco tour is best for a first visit?
If it is your first time in Cusco, the Cusco City Tour is a practical introduction because it includes the Cathedral, Qorikancha and nearby ruins such as Sacsayhuamán, Q’enqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay. If you have a full day, the Sacred Valley tour offers a broader route through Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero and Urubamba.
What is the difference between the half-day and full-day Cusco tours?
Half-day tours are shorter and easier to fit into a travel schedule. The City Tour runs in the afternoon, while the ATV tour to Moray and Maras starts in the morning. Full-day tours involve longer transfers, earlier pickups and more extensive routes, such as Humantay Lagoon, Rainbow Mountain, Rainbow Mountain + Red Valley and the Sacred Valley.
How difficult are the hiking tours from Cusco?
Humantay Lagoon and Rainbow Mountain both include uphill hikes of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. The Rainbow Mountain + Red Valley combo adds an extra hike of around 1 hour to Red Valley. These tours are more physically demanding than the City Tour, Sacred Valley tour or ATV experience.
Are entrance tickets included in the Cusco tours?
It depends on the tour. The ATV tour excludes entrance to Moray and Maras. The City Tour includes Qorikancha but excludes the Cathedral ticket and the General Tourist Ticket for the ruins. The Rainbow Mountain full-day tour excludes the park entrance, while the Rainbow Mountain + Red Valley combo includes entrances to both sites. The Sacred Valley tour includes Sacred Valley entrances but notes that the General Tourist Ticket must be purchased separately.
Do the Cusco tours include meals?
Meals vary by experience. Humantay Lagoon, Rainbow Mountain and Rainbow Mountain + Red Valley include breakfast and lunch. The Sacred Valley tour includes a buffet lunch but excludes breakfast and dinner. The ATV tour and Cusco City Tour do not list meals as included in the provided tour details.
What time do tours usually depart from Cusco?
Departure times vary by route. Rainbow Mountain and the Rainbow Mountain + Red Valley combo start around 04:00 AM, while Humantay Lagoon begins around 04:30 AM. The Sacred Valley tour starts around 07:00 AM, the ATV tour around 08:30 AM, and the Cusco City Tour around 01:00 PM.
Is transportation included in these Cusco tours?
Yes, the listed tours include transport or roundtrip transport from Cusco according to each itinerary. Some tours specify hotel pickup, while others mention transfer from/to Cusco or pickup from Cusco hotels. It is recommended to confirm your exact pickup point when booking.
Can I take a horse on the mountain hikes?
Optional horse service is mentioned for Humantay Lagoon and Rainbow Mountain, with an approximate cost listed for some routes. It is not included in the base tour price. In the Rainbow Mountain + Red Valley combo, horse service is also listed as excluded.
What should I bring for a Cusco tour?
Bring comfortable clothing, walking or hiking shoes, sun protection, water, cash in soles and a small daypack. For hiking routes, pack extra water and warm layers. For tours with excluded tickets or optional services, carry cash for entrances, horse service, tips or personal purchases.
